Q: I feel like a failure. My child is almost 8 years old and still hasn't learned to read. What tips or tricks can you suggest? Do I need a tutor? Should I put him in school?

Within a year of learning to really read--after being able to sound out words without constant prodding--to reading a book from the adult section--with hundreds of pages and no pictures.

A: A couple of decades ago, one child greatly affected my views on teaching children to read. This boy was about 8 or maybe 9 years old when his parents brought him to the tutoring company where I then worked as a full-time tutor.

I frequently am asked “What curriculum should I use with my preschooler?”

After teaching a lot of preschoolers in my home (including almost two dozen foster children in addition to our own forever children), I’ve learned a lot about what works with most young children and what doesn’t. I’ve learned that there’s no perfect curriculum that will be the best fit for everyone. I’ve become convinced that no literate adult really needs a curriculum to teach a preschooler. The average preschooler doesn’t want lots of workbooks, doesn’t want to sit for long periods of time, and doesn’t need a well-organized plan of study. A preschooler needs someone to expose him to interesting new ideas, give him age-appropriate things to do, keep him physically and mentally engaged, and entice him to want to learn more. Keep it fun and he’ll want to keep learning. Show him that grownups like to do things (hobbies, reading, cooking, or whatever) and he’ll want to start figuring out how to do those himself–and
