The form below is meant to be used to start the evaluation process after you have started keeping at least a few records of your child's learning. You could start with as little as records for one day of learning if it includes a little bit of a log of educational activities, at least 2 titles of reading materials, and at least a couple of samples of work.

Homeschoolers don't have to use workbooks or textbooks to learn. There are lots of ways to learn. Such as this hands-on math lesson: Playing store and practicing counting out change.

Homeschooling offers lots of learning opportunities and doesn't have to be limited to workbooks and textbooks.

Q: What if we don't use curriculum? What if we unschool and don't use textbooks or workbooks?

A: Florida law does not prescribe nor prohibit the use of certain methods or materials. You can use any that help your child learn and make educational progress commensurate with ability.

You still need to keep documentation. Your Log of Educational Activities could be a calendar with notes or a blog or a Facebook or Instagram page or any other media that helps you show off what your child is learning. The titles of reading materials can be library books, comics, stories, articles, magazines, websites, apps, or anything else that can be read. Samples of work can be photos or scans of work generated by the child or of materials used by the child.

Send what you can to start. I can help you figure out what else you need after I review what you've sent. Together we can make sure there are no issues later in the year with record-keeping.

The evaluation with extra support
option
allows a parent to begin the evaluation process 2-12 months in advance and get an early review of the portfolio and extra support months before an evaluation is actually due.


Steps:
(1) Complete the Evaluation with Support form.

• Upload photos or scans directly using the Evaluation with Extra Support form on this page, OR
• Email photos of 2-5 samples of work and 1 log of educational activities page to [email protected] ; include "Evaluation with Extra Support" and parent's or child's names in subject line, OR
• Share files from Google Drive, Drop Box, One Note, Facebook, Instagram, Shutterfly, etc. with us at [email protected]
  
• Pay using buttons below or contact us for information for sending check or money order

(2) Confirmation will be sent; usually within one week. We will note if additional information is required.
(3) Your materials with be reviewed now; you'll be notified of any shortcomings in the paperwork and additional questions may be answered.
(4) During the year, additional samples of work (and perhaps new titles of reading materials or a bit of a Log of Educational Activities) can be submitted directly via email.
(5) Contact us with questions if needed.
(6) 3-5 weeks before your evaluation deadline, we will call for a brief chat with the child(ren) and finalize the evaluation. (Let us know if the evaluation is required earlier; often we can do the evaluation within a business day if it was set up earlier in the year.)
(7)We send documentation to you, the parent, with directions for filing with school district as required by Florida law.

Q: I'm not sure what you want me to send to start the Evaluation with Extra Support Option. We won't actually begin homeschooling until next week and plan to use Master Books and Time4Learning. What should I send?

A:
Most wait to start the process until their first week of learning. You can start earlier if you have some materials ready to show  us.

What you would send:

(1) Log of educational activities
A photo(s) or scan(s) of your log of educational activities. It could just be notes of what your child is learning the first week. It could be a photo of the table of contents pages if you are using books. If you use a curriculum that comes with lesson plans, a photo or screenshot of the first day's plans with a check mark or date on it works great. It could be a lesson plan book showing notes about what was done the first week. It could be a screenshot of a report from an app they use. Or just a short list of some educational things the child did. Use the format that makes sense to you and send me a photo or scan of it. (You an change how you keep the log later if you wish; you aren't locked in to sticking with one method if you later find a better way.)  

For what you have planned, a photo of the table of contents from the Master Books would be perfect. Or a pdf of a student score report from Time4Learning would be another option.

(2) Titles of reading materials

Send at least 2 titles of reading materials. If you are using textbooks or workbooks, send the names of those. If you aren't, that's okay because they are not the only way to learn. You can send titles of any reading materials--books the child read (or that you read to the child), stories, websites, apps, magazines, etc. Find at least two titles to send me. (A few more is better, but at least two will work.)

For what you have planned, you would include the titles for your master books and Time4learning.

(3) Samples of work

Send a few samples of materials that your child used or created. You could send photos or scans of some pages read. Or of a project the child starts. Or screenshots of websites used or apps used. You could send photos of your child being active--that's P.E. Or working in the kitchen--home economics. Or gardening--science. I need at least two samples (no more than 6) to get started. Ideally, they'll give an idea of what your child is working on in the beginning.

For what you have planned, photos of the first page from the beginning of the Master Books and/or screen shots of Time4Learning lessons would be perfect.
